Johns Island, the largest island in the state of South Carolina, is a barrier island with a rich history and diverse ecosystem. Bordered by Wadmalaw, Seabrook, Kiawah, Edisto, Folly, and James islands, it is separated from its neighbors by the Stono and Kiawah rivers, which are part of the Intracoastal Waterway system. In terms of size, Johns Island is the fourth-largest island on the US East Coast, surpassed only by Long Island, Mount Desert Island, and Martha's Vineyard. It spans 84 square miles and is home to a population of 21,500 people, with almost one-third of the island annexed by the City of Charleston. 
 

History

The island has a rich history dating back to the colonial period, with scattered settlements established near the water in the 1670s. It was also the site of the Stono Rebellion in 1739, an unsuccessful attempt by a group of slaves to escape to Spanish Florida. Additionally, the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War both left their mark on the island, with battles and occupations occurring during these periods.

In addition to its historical significance, Johns Island is also home to the iconic Angel Oak, a live oak tree between 500 and 1,500 years old. The island's diverse wildlife includes deer, alligators, raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, otters, wild hogs, fish, shellfish, and a variety of bird species. The flora is abundant, with many native and imported species as well as agricultural crops.
